FUJITSU RELEASES DIFFERENTIAL SIGNAL CONNECTOR FOR NEXT-GENERATION GIGABIT TRANSFER RATES
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - May 4, 2000 - Fujitsu
Takamisawa America Inc. (FTA) today released a high-density differential connector
series that supports data transfer rates up to 5 gigabits/second (Gbits/s) with less
than 3% forward crosstalk at 100 pico second (ps) pulse-rise time (4 pairs switching).
The new connector offers designers a better cost-performance ratio in high-speed
systems than fiber optic or coax interconnects.

The Micro Giga connector series (MICRO GIGACNTM) is initially available in a
board-to-board, surface-mount plug and socket with a stacking height of 8mm.
It has a contact pitch of 0.75mm (0.30 in.) with 0.5mm pitch between leads.
Applications include network switches and hubs, and connections between components
in high-speed computer clusters, video systems, test equipment and real-time medical
equipment.
The connector's modified strip-line structure controls impedance and noise by
isolating each individual signal contact with a ground. Integral ground/power blades
separate each signal pair, while the centerline of each signal pair forms a virtual
ground plane. The result is less than 0.2dB insertion loss at 2.5 Gb/s (1.25 GHz),
less than 3% crosstalk, and 100 ohms impedance matching at 100 ps rise time. In
addition, skew within differential pairs is less than 10ps.
According to Bob Thornton, FTA's product marketing manager for interconnects, the new
connector can help system and board vendors span multiple product generations because
its characteristics meet the requirements of today's 1-Gbit/s systems and extend to
next-generation data rates of 2.5 and 5 Gbits/s.
"Even 10/100baseT networks require internal interconnects that must run at
significantly higher speeds with excellent signal integrity. The MICRO GIGACN can
provide that and also meet the requirements of 2.5 Gbit systems and beyond,"
Thornton said.
The MICRO GIGACN features sequential mating, which provides hot pluggability and ESD
protection, and is self-aligning to enable blind mating.
The MICRO GIGACN is available with 12, 24 and 36 contact pairs. Product delivery is 8-12 weeks ARO.
